Hormone “pellets” are one of the most superior methods for the treatment of low or imbalanced hormones. Hormone pellets are small and hard (like a grain of rice) bio-identical (human identical) hormones that are easily and painlessly implanted into the subcutaneous tissue in a short office procedure.
Hormone pellets help to drastically and safely improve quality of life by restoring natural hormone balance, reducing symptoms of andropause and menopause, and reducing signs and symptoms that come with aging.
Hormone pellets are a far superior form of bioidentical hormone replacement therapy due to the delivery method – pellets are absorbed directly into the bloodstream, therefore bypassing the liver where hormones can be altered and turn into their “bad forms.” Pellets bypass this process and are absorbed directly into the bloodstream and reach target tissues in their true bio-identical form. Pellets are also beneficial in that they can be tailored and doses can be easily customized for different patients’ needs. Pellets are often implanted quarterly for women and every 6 months for men, which make them very convenient for patients.
Pellets deliver a steady-state dose of human-identical hormone and provide better results and symptom relief than other therapies such as creams, patches, pills, troches, injections, etc… which often yield inconsistent and ineffective results.
The pellets are placed in the subcutaneous layer of tissue in a short office procedure that is painless and takes less than 5 minutes. Patients are first numbed using a quick acting local anesthesia injection and then the pellets are seamlessly placed with no discomfort. The incision made to place pellets is closed with small bandages called “steri strips” and water proof bandage to be left on for a few days.
The absorption rate of your pellets is based on your heart rate. You have an average daily heart rate and therefore an average daily absorption rate of your pellets. During times of stress or exercise, you may absorb at a higher rate due to your higher heart rate, which is a positive effect because you need higher levels of hormones during these times of stress and activity. The same is true for rest. At rest, your absorption rate is lower, which is a time when you need less hormone production. This is quite similar to your natural production of hormones. An experienced physician will know the variables that may affect your hormone absorption rate and how to account for this with specific and customized dosing.
This varies based on a variety of factors, however the average woman gets pellets every quarter (3-4 months) and the average man gets pellets placed every 4-6 months. The pellets are to be replaced before completely dissolving, preventing lapse in treatment and return of symptoms.
Side effects to hormone therapy are minimal and reversible if they do arise. Side effects from hormone pellets are no different than other delivery methods such as patches, creams, pills, etc.. Risk of infection, pain at insertion site, mild bruising and other procedural complications are possible, though not common. Side effects and risks will be discussed thoroughly at your appointment before pellet insertion.
